Seemingly without damage at first glance, the new building near Kobe had Its pile foundation completely damaged by the Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake. A comprehensive plan for reha, billtation was successfully implemented to jack-up and repair the foundation-building system. The experience gained from the project is vital in future rehabilitation of plle foundations damaged by extreme earthquake events. Slmple l-D free-field nonlinear analysls indicate large velocity and dlsplacement of ground surface on the side of the buildlng that underwent large differential settlement and 1-D soil-pile-building interaction analysis show consequently large response actions on the piles. Simple 1-D response analysis can explain the nature of pile damage and differential settlement that is attributable to the local variation in soll condltion under the building.
