Observation of the overall pile foundations damage pattern during the Hy-ogoken - NaJnbu earthquake in_dicate distinct features depending on whether the local response is dominated by ground shaking or ground failure. Although the database specific to the behavior of friction piles is limited, there is a reasonable indication of favotable behavior during the earthquake. Attempt is made to identify possible reasons for the favorable behavior of friction piles, with a view delineate future research directions. Possible implications to the future design practice in friction pile foundation is also discussed.
